Fraud Alert
A fraud alert is a trigger that consumers can place on their bureau credit profiles. It alerts them when a new credit account is being opened. Consumers are contacted by phone and are asked to verify the new creation of the new account. New credit accounts are not created until the consumers confirm the action.Fraud alerts help prevent credit fraud. In instances of identity theft, fraud alerts can help victims stop unauthorized credit account activity.
Equifax, Experian and TransUnion all have the ability to place fraud alerts. Contact each one to set up a fraud alert. Though setting a fraud alert with one agency should automatically trigger the other agencies to do the same, the process is not always done. Consumers should contact each credit bureau and request for a fraud alerts.
