Identity Fraud through Consumer Debit Cards
Identity theft and fraud through credit and debit cards are common. Consumers should be careful with their social security number as well as their old credit card statements. They should also be careful at Bank ATMs when punching in their PIN numbers. If someone should get a hold of your social security number, the thief can use that number to apply for new credit cards or to make fraudulent charges. So it's important not to casually give out your social security number. It's also important to shred any documents with a shredder such as old credit card statements or pre-approved credit card offers.
A subtle and increasingly common id theft practice is to steal PIN numbers from debit cards. Consumers need to be careful with their debit cards when at a bank ATM. Potential thieves may be lurking around trying to catch a peek at your debit card account and PIN. Should they get such information, they can make fraudulent debit withdrawals.
