Beacon Scores

A beacon score is a credit score that is provided by Equifax. The score is calculated using FICO's scoring algorithm and Equifax's consumer credit history. The beacon score, or also commonly referred to as the Equifax FICO score, is used by many businesses in the mortgage lending or auto financing industries.

A beacon score will differ from the other bureau credit scores, partly because each credit bureau agency records credit differently. The discrepancy is due to whether or not creditors and lenders submit their information to all three bureaus. In most instances this does not happen, thus different calculations of credit scores.

Both Equifax and TransUnion also have variations of their FICO score. They each use the FICO score algorithm and model to calculate their scores. Experian however, no longer works with FICO and produces its own bureau credit score.

Equifax's FICO score is called the Beacon score. TransUnion's FICO score is called the Empirica score.
